Freedom To Roam - The Rhythms of Migration, 2021
Amelia was commissioned by Eliza Marshall, founder of Freedom to Roam, to create 14 pieces of video art to accompany the live performance of the full album of Freedom to Roam - The Rhythms of Migration. This was a new album created in lockdown 2020 that explored the subject of migration in all of its forms, whether plant, animal or human. Alongside a documentary of the same name, the first performance took place in Cecil Sharp House in December 2020.
It was important that the video artworks took their inspiration from each of the 14 tracks of music on the album which was already written. Using source images or her own original photography, Amelia set about creating abstract, evolving, almost dreamscapes that fit each piece. They have been created with minute movement, so that, were the viewer to look at a musician playing and then look back, the image would be different but no one would have noticed any change taking place.
Eliza Marshall’s Freedom to Roam is a humanitarian and environmental project inspired by a desire for universal compassion and respect for nature. The project traverses themes such as climate change, conflict, environmental destruction, rewilding, restriction, empathy and what it means to be displaced without choice.
Each facet of the project (album, documentary and live concerts) has been crafted with world-class creatives and forms part of a journey through universal responses to our own and the planet’s most pressing needs. An ever-evolving initiative, Freedom To Roam aims to simultaneously ask deep questions about our humanity, our connection to nature and how best to respond positively to our current crises.
